AC motors operated by frequency inverters use pulse width modulation to control motor speed. This means that there are common mode voltages that are capacitively induced in the motor shaft and can discharge into the motor bearings.. This can cause surface corrosion damage, crystallization and striation by electro-erosion machining (EDM), resulting in breakdowns.
